Reflection after reading ‘Malala’

The story of ‘A Daughter Is Born’ is about girl name Malala whose society thinks girls and the birth of girls are not valued and feels sorry for the father when a girl is born. According to the book, “Daughters are hidden behind a curtain while the birth of a son is celebrated with rifles fired into the air,” it shows that having a boy is an exciting day and must be celebrated meanwhile it is a sad thing to have a girl and it must not be celebrated. Thus, girl has only simple role in life which is preparing food and giving birth of a children.

The name, Malala, has lots of meaning to it. To begin with, it was named after Malala of Maiwand, the greatest heroine of Afghanistan. Also, her father brought with him a vast family tree, Dalo Khel Yousafzai, showing only the male line. This means the family tree is only for the male and women are not allowed to take part in family tree. It also shows that Malala’s father Ziauddin broke the tradition and wrote her name connected to his on the family tree. Malala is on the family tree by her father’s action. We can assume that her father wanted her to be as Malala who was a woman who has a voice and played different role among women in Pakistan. Moreover, the namesake of a hero shows another possibility to implies that her father wanted her to have a successful future. However, her grandfather was worried since he knew that the namesake carry burden and thought that it could make her dangerous.

All of this shows that Pashtun society has discrimination against women. To overcome this, Malalai’s father starts to break the traditions of treating differently between women and men.

What does being a boy or girl mean to you?

There are different perspective about the roles of woman and men.  Males may believe that to be masculine they should avoid traditionally female work in the arts or human services and become sexually active early and have many partners. Females may believe that to be feminine they should submit to the wishes and demands of a sexual partner, have children, regardless of personal wishes and tolerate sexually harassing behavior without complaint. These points are some points that the expectations that others have and the unspoken gender rules from each gender.

As Korean girl, the freedom for men could be don’t have responsibility on birth. For woman, not going to the Korean army could be freedom because Korea is currently ceasefire condition.

Does the social media gain smartness or stupidity?

Social Media is a network which is part of technology and I totally believe that no technology makes us stupid as long as we use it wisely and effectively. However, the issue is it makes what near becomes further and what further becomes near. Teenagers may easily socialize and keep in touch with friends online but how about their communication with their family or neighbors? Anyway what we focus here is not the social effect, instead let’s discuss about intelligence gained from internet. If it was that easy to make friends online including sharing things then it would be easier to share information as well. When people supplying answers and insights, we can learn from it but definitely has to be with actual thinking. The social networking will make us smart if we don’t steal, meaning that we have to master paraphrasing and referencing skills because copying and pasting must be avoided. The increased connectivity among people will make the knowledge transferring is faster. Brainstorming is proved to be beneficial as it is a collaborative learning system that will solve problems faster and more accurately. Smartness is easy to get from social media since now the textbooks are mostly not longer printed out. These materials are transformed into e-books such as PDF file while sending files via online is cheaper and easier. Regardless of how social media make us dumb or smart, it depends on the user. Not only the user have to select the good and reliable resources, but they have to avoid plagiarism. Social media is not the only way to make students smarter, it is just a helpful tool which again has to be used wisely and effectively.

Who am I?

kors-MMAP-md

I am from Korea, but not from the north.  My name is Soobin Lee, you can call me Soobin! I am just a regular international student. I live far away from my country. My role at home is as the oldest sister, which means I have bigger responsible than my younger sister since I am expected to be her role model. I am grade 11 student in Australia Independent School in Jakarta, Indonesia and who is taking IB Diploma. I moved to indonesia because of father’s job. I am from one of the most competitive societies in the world whether in school, at work, in their day-to-day lives, even starts in childhood. I am from a place where school exam result civil service exam really really matter since hundred years ago. However, the competitive atmosphere motivates people to reach the goals of life.

As all Asian girls look like, I have brownish-black eyes and hair and yellowish skin tone. My height is a little bit above the average height of my peers. What makes me different from the others is my personality that is made up of where I am fro and what experiences I have had. Every person has positive and negative qualities, no matter who they are. As do I! So, what is good in me? I’m an outgoing, open-minded, cheerful, energetic, caring, polite, imaginative and hardworking person with a big sense of humor. However, I can describe myself negatively, too! I think I am lazy, moody, impatient, grumpy, indecisive and sometimes nervous.

DiplomaCircle

As I said on the first paragraph, I’m taking IB Diploma and the subjects I am taking are SL Maths, SL ITGS and SL Biology, HL Korean, HL English and HL Psychology and TOK. The reason why I am taking those subject is because all of them are related to my future career that is to become a psychologist. For my CCAs for the first term, I chose Green Team, PAWS, Badminton and the Robot program. I do these because I want to do activities that are based on service learning, creativity as well as action. While for my CAS activities, I decided to take over some service learning activities that some of the grade 11s did last year. The activities focus on helping Kampung Kids those kids that are suffering from poverty by educating basic English and growing plants and learning about vegan cooking. By doing these CAS activities, they will develop my communication skills, develop my understanding of others feelings and most importantly to contribute my knowledge to underprivileged kids. The best characteristic that I have is that I am an outgoing person. It is easy and enjoyable for me to cooperate with others, so I am able to make a lot of friends.

My hobbies are listening to music, watching movies and drama and reading comics. The things that I dislikes are insects, exercising and all about horror. The top three things that I value are myself and family, getting job that I like and not having regrets. The reason that I value myself and my family the most is because that is what I am made up of! The next valuable thing for me is getting a job that I like because my job will consume half of my life and I want to spend time on what I like to do! Lastly, not making regrets is important because I should learn lessons from every mistake that I have made.

Identity has shaped by personalities, experiences and environment. My personalities are represented by positive and negative attributes. For example, I am hard working, open minded and outgoing, on the other hand, lazy, moody and impatient. I have gained my experiences throughout the years, as I am now in 11th grade of senior high school. At last, the new school and the new country I have been living in is a totally new environment for me, I have learnt how to adapt to other cultures and understand the differences. As time goes by, my identity has changed. The reasons why it has changed is because I have grown up, I handle problems, I make mistakes, and deal with the things life throws at me. One thing has not changed is my national identity. Although I currently live abroad, I am still an ordinary Korean girl.

Value Auction

Reflect on the process we have been through in exploring values.  What things do you value that others don’t? Why do you value these? What things didn’t you know you valued? After the auction were you surprised at some of the things some students valued? Were boys and girls different? How? What were some things you wanted to buy and couldn’t? What were things you think your parents valued and you valued as well? What have you learnt about values from this process?

In class, we did activities on finding value for myself which is called Value Auction. Auction means public sale in which property or items of merchandise are sold to the highest bidder, so value auction is betting for what we value the most. From beginning, Ms. Sam gave $1000 in monopoly money to each of us for betting. There was list of value that we can bet such as getting diploma certificate, marrying the person who I live, being physically strong/muscular, finding job that I really like, looking good, live according to my religious belief, travel around the world and etc. There ware some I really wanted to get like getting diploma certificate, finding job that I really like and travel around the world. Most of boys wanted to get being physically strong/ muscular and was sold with $1000 which was surprising for me. Also, they choose value related to their appearance. On the other hand, girls wanted to get value such as having a child when I am ready. I think the reason is that having a child can change the woman’s life. From this, I could see the big difference between girls and boys. The value that everyone was interested were having job that I like and getting diploma certificate. I really wanted both of them but I couldn’t get because all of students wanted.

This activity really made me think of the things that I value in my life. I learnt that lots of factors such as culture, family, environment, friends and community you belongs will possibly affects to making values. It was great activity for me to classify the values that I thought of. Also, the value that I value don’t always value to others.

CCA Term 4 Week 5

Monday – Dancing

Friday – Badminton

As usual, we started off with 15mins of stretching and begin to learn dance for ‘Christmas Concert.’ It was 1 min long, and quite difficult for me to remember because Dance CCA is once a week. All of the Dance Club members decided to join the performance. And at the end of the lesson, teacher filmed our dance and posted up in Dance Club Group so that we can practice the movements.

For this badminton lesson, there were only few people actually doing the CCA. So I couldn’t do with team play, though I played with Minji. We played in short distance and after that long distance back and force to concentrate on the ball since we had only each other. It was new trial for me to do in badminton so it was interesting for me.
